ALCALA DE HENARES, SPAIN

Program Overview

This small city in the heart of Spain oozes history and culture, from the 16th century buildings that house noted Universidad de Alcalá to the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, who penned Don Quixote. With small classes, a local family host, and plenty of peer interaction, your already strong Spanish skills will further progress as the weeks fly by. Though there's much to explore right here, the capitol city of Madrid is 35-minutes away by train.

Summer 2019 Participant
This program will definitely immerse you in a Spanish-rich, history/literature/art-rich environment and have you feeling like a local if you put the effort into it. It can be very easy to revert to speaking English with your classmates, because this summer program is based on "foreign-student classes", i.e. the classes are taught in Spanish but composed only of Foreign students (non-locals, and in my experience, only Americans). That being said, the city of Alcalá is very beautiful and has a rich history; it is also conveniently close to Madrid, which will allow you to travel there often on afternoons or weekends and enjoy the big city life as well.

The study abroad experience was fantastic! The local advisors and staff with the study abroad company, CIEE, were extremely helpful and made the process as smooth as possible by answering my questions and guiding me when issues arose.
